Kanji Practice Sheets: Online Japanese Handwriting Worksheet Generator

You can create kanji practice sheets online: choose a set of kanji from N5 to N1 or enter your own characters, and the generator will build an A4 sheet with a model, stroke order, and boxes for writing. Print or save as PDF, free and without registration, on any device with a browser. A sheet is ready in a minute.

Ready-made practice sheets are usually fixed: preselected characters in a set order, while you need to learn what is relevant to you. The generator builds a sheet for a chosen level or for your own list of characters. Below is the generator itself and tips on how to practice kanji with it and how Japanese practice sheets differ from Chinese ones.

Create Kanji Practice Sheets: Set, Portion, Printing

Choose a kanji set or enter your own characters: an A4 sheet is generated instantly.

The set is chosen from a list: hiragana, katakana, and kanji for levels N5, N4, N3, N2, and N1. You can also enter your own characters, for example words from your textbook. Characters are given in portions of ten, each with its own row on an A4 sheet.

  • a model character and stroke order drawn stroke by stroke;
  • three boxes with a faint character for tracing;
  • empty boxes with a dotted cross guide for writing from memory.

How to get a sheet: printing or PDF

  1. Choose a set or enter your own characters.
  2. Open the desired portion of ten characters.
  3. Click the print button and select a printer in the browser window.
  4. For a file, choose "Save as PDF": the sheet will stay on your device.

The generator is free, no registration required. The N5 set in the generator has 60 characters, that is, six portions of ten.

How to Practice Kanji with a Sheet

A row leads from the model to writing from memory: first you look at the stroke order, then trace the faint characters, then write on your own in the boxes with a cross. General stroke order rules are covered separately; here practice matters.

Proportions of Parts in a Box

Kanji are more complex than kana: several parts fit in one box. The dotted cross helps you arrange them. In a character with left and right parts, such as 明, each takes its own half of the box rather than drifting to the center. In characters with an enclosure, like 国, the enclosure almost fills the square.

Radicals and Repetition

  • Look at the radical: in 休 there is a person on the left and a tree on the right, and remembering the character by parts is easier.
  • Write the character together with its reading and meaning, not in silence.
  • For one portion, three tracings and a few writings from memory are enough; the main thing is to return to the characters on another day.
  • Carry over characters that did not go well to the next sheet: the generator accepts your own characters.

Which Levels to Choose and How Japanese Practice Sheets Differ from Chinese

Start with N5: the characters there are simple, frequent, and you quickly build the skill. Typical N5 lists have about 80 kanji; in our generator the N5 set has 60 characters. Then come N4, N3, N2, and N1: the higher the level, the more strokes and parts in a character.

How Many Kanji in Total

The jōyō kanji list, which is considered the standard for everyday writing, includes 2,136 characters. You do not need to learn them all at once: portions of ten and levels make the volume manageable.

Japanese and Chinese Practice Sheets

Many characters are the same in Japanese and Chinese, but some Japanese forms differ from simplified Chinese ones: 国 is the same, while 図 and 気 in Chinese are written as 图 and 气. Therefore Chinese requires its own practice sheets.

FAQ

How to create kanji practice sheets online?
Open the generator above, choose a kanji set or enter your own characters, and open the desired portion of ten. Then click print: the A4 sheet will go to the printer or be saved as PDF. All free, no registration.
What is on a practice sheet?
Each character gets a row: a model, stroke order, three boxes with a faint character for tracing, and empty boxes with a dotted cross for writing from memory. This leads from copying to writing independently.
Which level should I start Japanese kanji practice sheets with?
With N5: typical lists have about 80 characters there, and our generator has a set of 60. These kanji are simple and frequent, so they are convenient for practicing stroke order and proportions, and then moving on to N4.
Can I make a sheet from my own characters?
Yes. The generator has a mode where you enter characters yourself, for example words from a lesson or ones you keep forgetting. A sheet fits up to 40 of your own characters, with the same model, stroke order, and boxes.
Are these practice sheets suitable for Chinese?
Not entirely. Many characters are the same, but some Japanese forms differ from simplified Chinese ones: 国 is the same, while 図 and 気 in Chinese look like 图 and 气. For Chinese you need practice sheets with Chinese forms.
