In horror, he fled; humiliated and enraged, Izanami sent witches and warriors of Yomi after him. Izanagi fought back, throwing behind him a comb (which turned into bamboo thickets) and peaches, and when he reached the border of the worlds, he blocked the passage with a giant boulder. Izanami promised to kill a thousand living people every day, and Izanagi in response vowed that then one thousand five hundred would be born every day — thus, according to legend, death and birth came into the world simultaneously.
